[Feature Story] Discover Taipei’s Military Dependents’ Villages
In 1949, Chiang Kai-shek’s government was forced to retreat to Taiwan, along with one million Kuomintang soldiers and their dependents. These ‘new immigrants’ put up provisional housing in the countryside, which ended up becoming permanent settlements and gradually shaped into communities with a distinct style.
The story of the military dependents’ village is part of the collective memory for the older generation in Taipei. In this issue, we are presenting the reader with the vanishing images of the military dependents’ villages, introducing the surprising changes at the Artist Village of Treasure Hill and then taking a tour to the Old Streets of Tamsui.
